SPX S&P 500 and NDX Nasdaq 100 Daily Charts; 5 Major Indexes (SPX, COMPQ, NDX, RUT, NYA) in Death Crosses; 4 Major Indexes (SPX, INDU, RUT, NYA) Negative on the Year
Five major indexes, the S&P 500, the Nasdaq Composite, Nasdaq 100, Russell 2000 and NYSE Composite, are in death crosses. The Dow Jones Industrials Index is not yet in a death cross. SPX and NDX are the last two to join the bear party. Prices typically bounces after a death cross but as long as the death cross remains, that will lead to extended weakness.
Four of the six major indexes listed below are negative on the year the S&P 500 turning negative for 2018 on Friday. The two Nasdaq indexes remain positive on the year since the FAANG stocks, Mr Softy and others provide the gusto during 2018.
There are only 15 trading days remaining in the year. The starting 2018 prices and current prices are shown for six major indexes;
SPX 2673.21 now at 2633.08, loss of -1.5% this year
INDU, or DJI, 24719.22 now at 24388.95, loss of -1.3% this year
COMPQ 6903.39 now at 6969.25, gain of +1% this year
NDX 6396.42 now at 6613.27, gain of +3.4% this year
RUT 1535.51 now at 1448.09, loss of -5.7% this year
NYA 12808.84 now at 11941.93, loss of -6.8% this year
The Nasdaq 100 outperforms this year since it has all the hot-shot tech stocks in its index like the FAANG stocks, MSFT and INTC. The Russell 2000 small caps are beaten -6% this year. That will leave a mark. The NYSE Composite is bludgeoned with a dull ax collapsing -7% thus far this year. Can the bulls muster up an end-of-year rally to turn the Dow Industrials and S&P 500 positive?
You can use the above as a market direction tool. Bulls win if the Nazzy indexes remain positive on the year and the SPX and INDU return to the bull camp. Bears win if the Nasdaq indexes turn negative on the year; the stock market will take another leg lower. Also, watch for the potential death cross for the Dow Industrials.
