SPX S&P 500 Support, Resistance (S/R), Moving Averages and Other Important Levels for Trading the Week of 3/21/16

SPX (S&P 500) support, resistance (S/R), moving averages and other important levels are provided for the trading week of 3/21/16. Levels shown in bold are strong resistance and support. Bold and underlined levels are very strong and important S/R. For 2016, the intraday high for the year is 2052.36 on 3/18/16 and the closing high for the year is 2049.58 on 3/18/16. The SPX is positive on the year.

For 2016, the intraday low for the year is 1810.10 on 8/11/16 and the closing low thus far for the year is 1829.08. The intraday low in 2015 was 1867.01 on 8/24/15 and intrayear closing low for 2015 is 1867.61 on 8/25/15.

For Monday, 3/21/16, with the SPX starting at 2050, the bulls need two points higher to punch up through 2052 and the upside will accelerate towards 2060 in a flash. The bears need to push the S&P 500 under 2041 to create a downside acceleration into the mid 2030’s in a heartbeat. A move through 2042-2051 is sideways action to begin the week.

The SPX is above the important 12-month MA at 2031 indicating a cyclical (weeks and months) bull market ahead. Bears need to push the SPX under 2031 as soon as possible or they are toast. The CPC and CPCE put/call ratios are at uber lows verifying market complacency and a near-term market top. Traders were drinking Fed wine on Friday and buying stocks with reckless abandon not even concerned about what they were buying. The put/calls indicate that a quick drop in the SPX of 30 to 100 handles is a reasonable expectation in the coming days.

The SPX also moves above the starting year number at 2044 and is positive on the year. The bulls face strong overhead resistance at 2061 and if they can punch up through 2067 would be targeted next after a brief give and take at 2064.

On the bear side, failure at 2038-2041 will send price sharply down to 2031-2033. This back test lower to the 12-month MA at 2031 is extremely critical since price will either bounce or die from 2031-2033 and the direction will result in serious ramifications with one side winning big and the other losing big. A failure would result in a very quick and ugly outcome with price collapsing to 2017-2023 in a flash, then 2011 then 2002.

Looking at the near-term picture the strongest S/R is 2079, 2071, 2067, 2061, 2046, 2038-2040, 2032-2033, 2023, 2019, 2011, 2002, 1997, 1993 and 1985-1988.
